Is Bisto Halal?

⚠️ Mushbooh

Bisto gravy granules (beef and chicken variants) contain meat extract whose slaughter source is undisclosed. Premier Foods does not halal-certify Bisto for the UK market. Without certification, the meat-based variants are Mushbooh. Bisto Best Onion and vegetable-based varieties carry less concern but still lack certification.

Verify the exact product

Bisto may be questionable in some cases, so the safest path is to confirm the specific product and ingredient list.

Is Bisto Halal?

Bisto is Premier Foods’ market-leading gravy brand in the UK. It comes in several formulations — granules, powder, and Best varieties — across beef, chicken, onion, and other flavours. The halal status depends on the specific variant.

Beef and Chicken Granules — Mushbooh

Bisto Original (beef) Gravy Granules and Bisto Chicken Gravy Granules contain beef or chicken fat and meat extract. Premier Foods does not disclose the slaughter method used for this meat extract, and neither the HMC nor the HFA lists Bisto as a certified product.

Under mainstream Sunni ruling, meat from an animal slaughtered without following Islamic rites (tasmiya + zabiha method) is not halal. Since the source of the meat extract is unverified and no halal certification is held, these products are Mushbooh — doubtful and best avoided.

E635 (Disodium 5’-Ribonucleotides) appears in some Bisto formulations as a flavour enhancer. E635 is a blend of E627 and E631, which can be sourced from pork, fish, or plant fermentation. Without certification, this adds a further layer of doubt.

Onion and Vegetable Variants

Bisto Best Onion Gravy and some specialty Bisto variants do not list beef or chicken extract. However, they may share production lines with meat-containing products. Without halal certification, these still carry Mushbooh status for cautious consumers.

Alternatives

For halal-certified gravy, look for products carrying HMC or HFA certification logos in halal supermarkets, or use homemade stock from certified halal meat combined with Bisto-style cornflour thickening.
