Is Galaxy Halal?

⚠️ Mushbooh

Galaxy chocolate (Mars UK) contains E476 (PGPR) and E471 (mono and diglycerides of fatty acids) — emulsifiers that can be derived from animal fats. Mars does not disclose the source for UK products, and no halal certification is held. UK Galaxy is therefore Mushbooh.

Is Galaxy Chocolate Halal?

Galaxy is a milk chocolate brand manufactured by Mars Inc., one of the world’s largest confectionery companies. In the UK, Galaxy is popular for its smooth, creamy texture — a result of the specific fat blend and emulsifiers used in the recipe. It is precisely these emulsifiers that make Galaxy a Mushbooh brand for UK halal consumers.

Galaxy UK products contain E476 (PGPR, polyglycerol polyricinoleate) and/or E471 (mono and diglycerides of fatty acids). Both emulsifiers are used to improve chocolate texture and reduce production costs. Both can be derived from either plant oils (halal) or animal fats (potentially haram), and Mars does not publicly disclose which source is used for UK manufacturing.

The Emulsifier Problem

E476 (PGPR) is synthesised from glycerol and fatty acids. The fatty acids can come from castor oil (plant — halal) or from animal fat — and the glycerol component may also be animal-derived. Without a halal audit, the source cannot be confirmed.

E471 is found in the chocolate and in some Galaxy products’ other components (biscuit layers, fillings). Like E476, it may be plant- or animal-derived. Mars UK has not committed to plant-only sourcing for these emulsifiers in publicly available documentation.

E322 (lecithin) — where specified as soy lecithin, this is plant-derived and halal. Most Galaxy labels specify “soya lecithin,” which is a positive sign, but it does not address the E476 concern.

Galaxy Products and Status

All standard Galaxy chocolate bars sold in the UK are Mushbooh due to the E476/E471 concern. This includes Galaxy Smooth Milk, Galaxy Caramel, Galaxy Ripple, Galaxy Bubbles, Galaxy Duet, and the Galaxy Chocolate Boxes (Celebrations, Galaxy Gift Box). Galaxy Darker — the dark chocolate variant — also contains E476.

Halal-certified Galaxy products may be manufactured for markets in Saudi Arabia, UAE, and other Gulf countries under local formulations. These are produced in different facilities and cannot be assumed to be the same as UK products.
