Is Lurpak Halal?
Lurpak is a Danish butter brand produced by Arla Foods, one of the largest dairy cooperatives in the world. It is widely available in UK supermarkets and is a popular choice for cooking and spreading.
Standard Lurpak Butter contains two ingredients: pasteurised cream and salt (or just cream for the unsalted version). There are no emulsifiers, no animal-derived additives beyond the dairy itself, and no haram ingredients. Butter from cows is permissible under all four Sunni madhabs without restriction.
Lurpak Spreadable adds rapeseed oil to the butter to make it spreadable directly from the fridge. Rapeseed oil is a plant-based oil — halal. The formulation still contains no E-codes of concern.
Lurpak Lighter is a reduced-fat spread that uses water and buttermilk in addition to butter and oil. No gelatine or animal-derived emulsifiers are present.
Lurpak Cooking Liquid (used for frying/baking) is clarified butter with rapeseed oil — no animal-derived additives beyond the dairy.
Arla does not pursue halal certification for the Lurpak UK range, but the simple formulation of cream (and oil in spreadable variants) requires no certification to establish permissibility.
