Is Mentos Halal?

⚠️ Mushbooh

Chewy Mentos rolls sold in the UK and Europe contain gelatine whose animal source is not declared — it may be pork-derived, making them Mushbooh. Hard mint Mentos typically contain no gelatine but carry no halal certification. Mentos manufactured in Malaysia is JAKIM halal-certified and genuinely permissible.

Is Mentos Halal?

Mentos is a chewy mint and fruit sweet brand produced by Perfetti Van Melle, one of the world’s largest confectionery companies. The brand is sold globally in a wide variety of formats — the iconic chewy rolls, gum, hard candy, and mini mint packs. For UK halal consumers, the key issue is whether specific variants contain gelatine or beeswax coatings.

The original Mentos mint and fruit chewy roll uses a sugar shell and a chewy centre. In some market formulations, the chewy centre uses gelatine as a texture agent. In other formulations (including some UK variants), modified starch is used instead. Without consistent halal certification, consumers cannot rely on a single rule — label-checking is essential.

Gelatine in Mentos

E441 (gelatine) may be present in certain Mentos roll variants depending on the manufacturing batch and market formulation. In UK products, gelatine is assumed porcine unless stated otherwise or a halal certificate is present. Where starch is used instead of gelatine, the product is cleaner — but this must be confirmed on the specific label.

Beeswax Coating — E901

Some Mentos variants have a shiny outer coating that uses E901 (beeswax). Beeswax is produced by bees and is considered halal by the majority of Sunni scholars (the consensus is that products from living halal animals, such as honey and beeswax, are permissible). However, some scholars and HMC take a stricter view. The beeswax coating is a minor concern compared to gelatine.

Mentos Fruit Roll — The Cleanest Option

The standard Mentos Fruit Roll (mixed fruit flavours in the distinctive cylindrical roll) is generally formulated with starch rather than gelatine for the chewy texture. However, the absence of a halal logo means consumers should check the ingredients on the current pack. The fruit flavours also use synthetic colourings (halal) rather than carmine.

Mentos in Malaysia — Genuinely Halal

Perfetti Van Melle operates a manufacturing facility in Malaysia. Mentos produced there for the Malaysian and wider Southeast Asian market is certified halal by JAKIM (Jabatan Kemajuan Islam Malaysia). If you are buying Mentos in Malaysia, Indonesia, or from a retailer stocking Malaysian-origin Mentos, look for the JAKIM logo on the wrapper or the country of manufacture printed on the reverse.

Halal Alternatives

If you want a certified mint or fruit chew in the UK:

  • Trebor Extra Strong Mints — no gelatine in the classic hard mints
  • Fox’s Glacier Mints — hard mints, no gelatine
  • Bebeto fruit candies — halal-certified, widely stocked in UK halal shops
  • Vidal chewy candy — HFA-certified ranges in major UK supermarkets

Is Lemonhead Halal? — HalalCodeCheck Brand Guide

Lemonhead

⚠ Mushbooh

Lemonhead's standard ingredient list — sugar, corn syrup, citric acid, lemon juice from concentrate, confectioner's glaze, natural and artificial flavors, gum arabic, modified corn starch, carnauba wax, colouring, mineral oil — contains no gelatine. The sticking point is the confectioner's glaze, which is shellac (E904), a resin secreted by the lac insect. This site treats E904 as Mushbooh, consistent with the split among halal certification bodies — some permit it by analogy with honey, others (including most UK bodies) don't certify products that contain it. Ferrara holds no halal certification for Lemonhead and does not publish gelatine sourcing details for its wider range, so the cautious verdict is Mushbooh rather than a confirmed Halal.

Is Mars Chocolate Halal? — HalalCodeCheck Brand Guide

Mars

⚠ Mushbooh

Mars UK/EU products have no halal certification. The key concern is E471 (mono & diglycerides of fatty acids) — present in most Mars chocolate bars — which can be derived from animal or plant fat. The source is not disclosed. Skittles and Starburst have removed carmine (E120) from the US recipe, but UK/EU formulations must be checked separately. Muslims in the UK should treat standard Mars products as Mushbooh until certification is obtained.

Is Stimorol Halal? — HalalCodeCheck Brand Guide

Stimorol

⚠ Mushbooh

Stimorol carries no halal certification and Mondelez makes no halal statement for it; the filled Splash/Sensations flavours contain gelatine of undisclosed origin and Jamiat-Ul-Ulama of Mauritius has ruled multiple Stimorol flavours impermissible. Plain variants (Original, Fresh Mint) are gelatine-free but use an undisclosed gum base — Mushbooh overall, with the filled variants best avoided entirely.
