A halal brand can still have product-level differences by variant, country, or certification batch.

Is Tic Tac Halal?

Tic Tac is a brand of small, hard mints produced by Ferrero, the Italian confectionery group also responsible for Ferrero Rocher, Kinder, and Nutella. Tic Tac mints are among the world’s most widely consumed breath mints, sold in distinctive hinged plastic boxes. For halal consumers, Tic Tac mints are one of the cleaner mainstream confectionery options.

Standard Tic Tac mints (Original Mint, Fresh Mint, Spearmint) contain: sugar, maltodextrin, rice starch, tartaric acid, natural flavouring, and a coating of carnauba wax or shellac. The key question for halal consumers is the wax coating.

The Wax Coating — E904 Shellac

Some Tic Tac products use E904 (shellac) as a glazing agent to give the smooth, shiny finish. Shellac is a resin secreted by the lac bug (Kerria lacca). The halal status of shellac is debated:

  • Majority Sunni view: Shellac is derived from an insect secretion rather than the insect itself, and some scholars permit it (analogous to honey from bees).
  • Strict view (HMC): Shellac from a non-slaughtered insect is not permitted; products with E904 should be avoided.

Where Tic Tac uses E414 (gum arabic) or carnauba wax instead of shellac, there is no concern — both are plant-derived and halal.

Tic Tac Fruit and Flavoured Varieties

Tic Tac Fruit Adventure, Orange, Lime, and similar flavoured varieties use synthetic food colourings — no carmine (E120), no animal-derived dyes. The natural flavourings are fruit-derived. These variants do not introduce gelatine or animal fat.

Ferrero’s Position

Ferrero states that Tic Tac products do not contain pork-derived ingredients. This is consistent with the ingredient profiles visible on UK packaging. Tic Tac is widely accepted as halal by Muslim consumers in the UK and globally.
