Is Sprite Halal?
Sprite is a lemon-lime flavoured carbonated soft drink produced by The Coca-Cola Company. It is one of the world’s most popular soft drinks, known for its clear colour and crisp citrus flavour. For halal consumers, Sprite is one of the simplest soft drinks to assess.
Standard Sprite contains: carbonated water, sugar, citric acid (E330), natural lemon and lime flavourings, sodium citrate (E331), and acidity regulators. There are no colourings in Sprite — the drink is clear — and there are no animal derivatives of any kind.
Why Sprite Is Halal
The ingredient list of Sprite is minimal and entirely plant-derived. There are no emulsifiers, no stabilisers, no gelatine, no carmine, and no taurine. The natural lemon and lime flavourings are fruit-derived. The absence of any colouring agent means there is no risk of E120 (carmine) contamination.
E330 (citric acid) — produced by fermentation of plant sugars (corn or molasses). Halal.
E331 (sodium citrate) — the sodium salt of citric acid. Synthetic, halal.
Neither ingredient is animal-derived, and no other additives are used in standard Sprite.
Sprite Zero
Sprite Zero replaces sugar with acesulfame K and aspartame — both synthetic sweeteners with no animal origins. The rest of the formula is identical to regular Sprite. Sprite Zero is also halal by ingredients.
Sprite and Alcohol
Sprite contains no alcohol. It is 100% non-alcoholic. While Sprite is sometimes used as a mixer in cocktails, the drink itself contains no alcohol and is fully permissible.
